What is Effexor?
Effexor is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Effexor works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems.
Effexor is used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder.
Effexor may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
PRECAUTIONS:
Before taking venlafaxine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: bleeding problems, certain mental/mood conditions (bipolar disorder), dehydration, glaucoma, heart problems (high blood pressure, unstable heart disease, heart failure, recent heart attack), high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, thyroid problems, untreated mineral imbalance (e.g. hyponatremia).
This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy or cause blurred vision; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Though uncommon, depression can lead to thoughts or attempts of suicide. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any suicidal thoughts, worsening depression, or any other mental/mood changes (including new or worsening anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, rapid speech). Keep all medical appointments so your healthcare professional can monitor your progress closely and adjust/change your medication if needed. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its effects. The elderly are more likely to develop a type of mineral imbalance (hyponatremia), especially if they are also taking "water pills" or diuretics with this medication. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. If this medication is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, infrequently your newborn may develop symptoms including feeding or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, jitteriness, or constant crying. However, do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor directs you to do so. Report any such symptoms to your doctor promptly. This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
What side effects may occur?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Effexor.
Side effects of Effexor may include:
Abnormal ejaculation/orgasm, anxiety, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, impotence, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, sleepiness, sweating, tremor, vomiting, weakness, weight loss
Side effects of Effexor XR may include:
Abnormal dreams, abnormal ejaculation, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, sleepiness, sweating, weakness, weight loss
What should I avoid while taking Effexor?
Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Effexor. This medication can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Tell your doctor if you regularly use other drugs that can cause sleepiness (such as cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medication, sedatives, muscle relaxers, or medicines to treat seizures or anxiety). These may add to sleepiness caused by Effexor.
MISSED DOSE:
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Ingredients and Storage
Effexor XR contains venlafaxine hydrochloride, an antidepressant. Inactive ingredients consist of cellulose, ethylcellulose, gelatin, hypromellose, iron oxide, and titanium dioxide.
Store Effexor XR at room temperature (68° to 77°F, or 20° to 25°C). Keep Effexor XR away from children.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Effexor
Combining Effexor with MAO inhibitors could cause a fatal reaction.
Although Effexor does not interact with alcohol, the manufacturer recommends avoiding alcohol while taking Effexor.
If you have high blood pressure or liver disease, or are elderly, check with your doctor before combining Effexor with cimetidine.
You should consult your doctor before combining Effexor with other drugs that affect the central nervous system, including lithium, migraine medications known as triptans, narcotic painkillers, sleep aids, weight-loss products such as phentermine, tranquilizers, antipsychotic medicines, and other antidepressants that affect serotonin, such as fluoxetine and paroxetine.
Effexor has been found to reduce blood levels of the HIV drug indinavir. It's best to check with your doctor before combining Effexor with any other drug or herbal product.
